About Me.

"My love of Horses inspired my love of Art"

Hi, I'm Teresa, an Australian-based artist, originally from the UK. I spent most of my childhood in a little town situated on the edge of the Bristol Channel. My love for horses started as early as I can remember, and as a child, I dreamt of having a pony of my own. My dad, however, insisted that it was just a phase and that I'd grow out of it - but I had other plans! I was seven years old when I came up with the idea that I would save up and buy my own pony! All of my friends were being given pocket money each week, so I decided to ask my dad if I could have some as well. I was so excited when he agreed! I started my 'Pony Fund' and began saving. It took seven long years of determination (and tears) but I never gave up. At 14, I finally made my dream come true when I bought 'Sam' an unbroken 2yr old. During those years, I also discovered my love for drawing horses. At around 10 I attempted my first oil painting, (a 'paint by numbers') which sparked my passion for art. I was fascinated by the masterpieces at the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, where I would try to work out the methods used by the Old Masters. After leaving school, I worked at a riding school to support Sam's upkeep. Eventually, I was invited to join their 12-month BHSAI/BHSH course as a working pupil - an opportunity I eagerly accepted! The school had 2 stable cats, Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dumb, and one day, my boss jokingly called me '"Twee"- and it stuck!! I am a completely self-taught artist having never had the chance to attend formal art classes beyond school. My journey has been one of trial & error - lots of errors! Though I started as an oil painter, I never felt truly satisfied with my work until I impulsively enrolled in an online course and discovered the wonderful world of soft pastels. I felt an immediate connection with this medium & haven't looked back since!

About my Portraits

Pastel portrait of a cat

My Style

I would describe my style as realism with a touch of painterly.

My aim is to create as close a representation as possible to the features & character that is unique to each & every animal that I have the privilege to paint.

Examples of photos

Photos

I always work from photos & begin each piece with a vision in mind. However, it is crucial that the photos provided are good quality clear images, as the quality & detail of the finished portrait is fully dependent on the provided photos. Poor quality, blurry photos require some guesswork from me to fill in the details, which may result in a less than accurate representation of your pet.  Please Note: Due to copyright law, all photos taken by a professional photographer will require permission from the photographer before I can use them - Most photographers are fine with this.

Compilation of the pastel types I use

Materials used

My portraits are created using a variety of soft pastels & pastel pencils on high quality specialty pastel paper. Unlike some other mediums, pastels do not yellow, darken or crack with age. However, because pastels are made from a powdered pigment that has been mixed together with a binder, they have a delicate surface which must be handled with care & framed correctly as the pigment can be easily smeared if touched. All portraits come mounted & ready to frame with a Certificate of Authenticity and information sheet on handling & framing.
